ADHD assessment availability and rules vary by state. Here's the current landscape as of February 2026:
Queensland (QLD) Since December 2025, trained GPs in Queensland can diagnose ADHD in adults and initiate stimulant medication. This is the most significant reform in Australia and makes assessment far more accessible and affordable. Read more: GP ADHD diagnosis in Queensland.
South Australia (SA) From February 2026, trained GPs can diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication for patients aged 8 and over. Read more: GP ADHD diagnosis in SA.

Victoria, Western Australia, ACT Reforms have been announced and are expected to roll out through 2026. Currently, psychiatrists and psychologists remain the primary assessment pathways.
