Take the screening quizNSW is implementing GP ADHD reforms in two stages through the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI). The government has described these as "game-changing reforms" to reduce wait times and costs.
As of February 2026, Stage 1 is live and delivering real results. Stage 2 (full GP diagnosis) is expected to launch from March 2026.
GPs who complete the ACI training pathway can become "continuation prescribers." As of January 2026:
This stage primarily benefits patients who are already diagnosed and stable, reducing the need for expensive specialist follow-up appointments just to renew prescriptions. It frees up specialist capacity for new diagnostic assessments.
GPs must work in an accredited practice and have completed the training course within the past 3 years.
The second stage will allow trained GPs to become "endorsed prescribers" who can:
Training pathway: The endorsed prescriber training is expected to take 3-6 months to complete. Nearly 600 GPs have already expressed interest in this training. The NSW government has indicated that GPs in "areas of greatest need" will be prioritised for early training access, with priority GPs contacted from February 2026.

Not yet, but it is coming. NSW is rolling out reforms in two stages through the Agency for Clinical Innovation. Stage 1 lets trained GPs act as continuation prescribers for people already diagnosed and stable. Stage 2, which allows GP-led diagnosis, began training around 300 GPs in March 2026, with NSW-funded assessments expected from early 2027.
A GP who has completed the ACI training pathway and can renew ADHD medication for patients who are already diagnosed and stable, without them needing to see a specialist for each script. As of mid-2026 there are over 1,400 approved continuation prescribers in NSW, serving more than 15,000 patients.
If you are already diagnosed and stable, moving script renewals to your GP can save $200–$400 or more per specialist appointment. Over 70,000 scripts had been filled under Stage 1 as of mid-2026, which also frees specialist capacity for new assessments.
See your GP for a referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan, join a specialist waitlist now rather than waiting for the reforms, and ask your GP whether they are a continuation prescriber if you are already diagnosed. Telehealth providers operating Australia-wide can also have shorter waits than local specialists.
