Take the screening quizADHD assessment costs in Australia depend on the type of provider you see, your location, and whether you access Medicare rebates. This guide breaks down real costs from providers in our directory alongside published fee data and Medicare schedule amounts.
The short answer: expect to pay $89 to $1,800 out of pocket for a full ADHD assessment, depending on your pathway. A psychiatrist assessment (typically two sessions) costs $1,000-$1,600 total with $89-$689 out of pocket after Medicare. A psychologist assessment (typically three sessions plus a report) can cost $1,200-$2,280 with $764-$1,844 out of pocket. If you're in Queensland or South Australia, a GP pathway may cost as little as $0-$120.
The 2023 Senate inquiry into ADHD heard evidence of out-of-pocket costs ranging from $1,500 to $3,500 for diagnosis, with one volunteer-run advocacy group flagging concerns about "exceedingly high fees" and potential "price gouging" by some providers.

| Victoria | $564 | $0–$2970 | 501 providers |

A 2023 study published in *Australasian Psychiatry* documented significant geographic variation in psychiatrist fees across states and territories. Metropolitan specialists typically charge $700-$800 for an initial assessment, while regional psychiatrists may charge $500-$650. This geographic variation is a consistent theme across all provider types.
The total cost of an ADHD assessment depends on which pathway you take. Here are the typical total costs for an adult assessment:
| Pathway | Total Cost | Medicare Rebates | Out-of-Pocket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Psychiatrist (2 sessions) | $1,000–$1,600 | ~$911 (Item 291 x2) | $89–$689 |
| Clinical psychologist (3 sessions) | $750–$1,050 | ~$436 (Item 80010 x3) | $314–$614 |
| Psychologist (3 sessions + report) | $1,200–$2,280 | ~$436 | $764–$1,844 |
| Public system | $0–$50 | N/A | $0–$50 |
| GP pathway (QLD/SA, 2026) | $80–$120 | Often bulk-billed | $0–$120 |
Psychiatrist pathway: Most private psychiatrists require two sessions for an ADHD assessment — an initial diagnostic session (45-60 minutes) and a follow-up to discuss results and treatment (30-45 minutes). Some require additional sessions.
Psychologist pathway: Psychology assessments typically involve three sessions plus a written report. The report itself may be an additional cost ($500-$1,080) depending on the practice. Psychologists can diagnose ADHD but cannot prescribe medication — you'll need a subsequent psychiatrist or GP appointment for medication, adding to total costs.
GP pathway: Where available (QLD since December 2025, SA from February 2026), GP assessment is dramatically cheaper. A standard GP consultation is $80-$120 and is often bulk-billed, making it the most affordable pathway by far.
Medicare can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket cost — but only with a GP referral.
| MBS Item | Provider | Duration | Schedule Fee | Medicare Rebate (85%) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 291 | Psychiatrist (referred) | 45+ min | $535.95 | $455.60 | Requires GP referral |
| 296 | Psychiatrist (unreferred) | 45+ min | $308.30 | $262.10 | Without referral |
| 80010 | Clinical Psychologist | 50+ min | $170.85 | $145.25 | Via Better Access (MHTP) |
| 80110 | Registered Psychologist | 50+ min | $116.40 | $98.95 | Via Better Access (MHTP) |
The difference a referral makes: Item 291 (referred psychiatrist) gives you $455.60 back vs $262.10 without a referral — a difference of $193.50 per appointment. Getting a GP referral before your assessment is the single biggest cost-saver. It's free if your GP bulk bills, and unlocks much higher rebates.
There is no dedicated Medicare item for ADHD assessment. This means ADHD assessments are billed under general psychiatry or psychology items. No mechanism exists to provide higher rebates for the longer, more complex assessment process that ADHD requires. Multi-session assessments accumulate gaps quickly.
If you have high out-of-pocket medical costs, the Medicare Safety Net provides additional support:
| Safety Net | 2026 Threshold | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) | $594.40 | Rebate increases from 85% to 100% of schedule fee |
| Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) | $2,699.10 | 80% of additional out-of-pocket costs covered |
| Concessional EMSN | $861.20 | Lower threshold for concession card holders |
Once your gap expenses reach the threshold in a calendar year, Medicare reimburses you 100% of the schedule fee (instead of 85%) for any further out-of-hospital medical services. This applies to all MBS services, not just ADHD-related ones — so if you or your family have other medical costs, you may reach the threshold faster.
Families and couples can combine their Medicare gap expenses toward the threshold.
Some ADHD providers bulk bill, meaning zero out-of-pocket cost. Based on our directory data:
Bulk billing for specialist ADHD assessments is uncommon but does exist, primarily in community health settings and some GP practices. Find bulk billing ADHD providers near you.
The Better Access initiative provides Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions. Key changes from 1 November 2025:
There is no ADHD-specific coverage category in private health insurance. ADHD-related services may be covered through:
You cannot claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same service.
Telehealth ADHD assessments are generally comparable in cost to in-person, with some advantages:
| Factor | Telehealth | In-Person |
|---|---|---|
| Typical psychiatrist fee | $450–$700 | $500–$800 |
| Medicare rebate | Same | Same |
| Wait time | 2–8 weeks | 2–6 months |
| Travel costs | $0 | Variable |
Telehealth platforms often have lower overheads and may pass savings to patients. They're also critical for regional and rural access where in-person specialists are scarce. Telehealth ADHD assessments are clinically validated and legally equivalent to in-person assessments. Browse online ADHD providers.
Payment plan availability varies widely. Some practices explicitly state no payment plans (full payment at booking), while others offer split billing across sessions. Ask when you book.
ADHD costs Australia an estimated $20.42 billion annually, according to Deloitte Access Economics — $12.83 billion in financial costs and $7.59 billion in reduced wellbeing. The majority (81%) of financial costs come from productivity losses including reduced workforce participation, absenteeism, and presenteeism.
Despite this enormous economic burden, many Australians delay assessment due to upfront costs. The 2022 Better Access evaluation identified "record-high gap fees" and "widening gaps for people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and rural areas" as major problems.
Early diagnosis and treatment is cost-effective. The return on investment for ADHD treatment is among the highest of any mental health intervention — yet the upfront cost of diagnosis remains a significant barrier for many families.
